Paddles & Peaks: Completing 7th, 8th, 9th or 10th grades
July 3-9, 2022 (Week 3: 1 Week Session)
July 17-23, 2022 (Week 5: 1 Week Session)
This action-packed week begins in our Sunrise Village and journeys out to explore some of the most scenic areas of the Appalachian Mountains. This week includes an overnight canyon canoe trip, camping and climbing at world-famous Seneca Rocks, wild caving deep under the mountains, and your choice of a Zip Line Canopy Tour or Via Ferrata climbing experience to top off your adventures.

Sunday
Arrive at camp! Get to know your group, settle into Sunrise Village tent camp and help cook the evening meal over the campfire.

Monday
The first full day of camp is packed with team building challenges to help you mesh with your group in preparation for the week’s outings. We will stretch our legs with a day hike to Smoke Camp Knob to catch unbeatable views of the Appalachians following by a ride on our 1000 foot zip line. We’ll return to Sunrise Village and practice our Dutch oven cooking skills for dinner before packing up for the next few days away from base camp.

Tuesday
We’ll head out bright and early for the Potomac River as it winds its way through an incredibly scenic canyon. Canoe camping is one of the best ways to experience the fun and solitude of this corner of West Virginia, and we’ll enjoy practicing our paddle skills and playing on our way down the river before setting up camp on the beach.

Wednesday
We’ll pack up our riverside campsite, paddle on down the river to the take-out, and then jump in the van for our next destination: Seneca Rocks. Seneca offers beautiful views and fantastic rock climbing for all levels. Winding down the day we will play in the river before setting up our campsite in view of the Rocks.

Thursday
Today is “choose your own adventure!” After packing up the campsite at Seneca, we’ll head on down the road to the Nelson Rocks formation where more high challenges await. Campers can choose either the zip line canopy tour to get a flying squirrel’s eye view of the forest, or the Via Ferrata for a thrilling and unique climbing experience. Then it’s back to Sunrise Village for well-earned showers and more gourmet meals over the campfire.

Friday
Our last full day of camp takes us deep under the Appalachians for a wild caving adventure. After exploring the wild and wacky world of the cave, we’ll return to Sunrise Village for some R & R. At the end of the day, we’ll share our adventures with the Traditional campers through our GoPro presentation by joining the closing campfire.

Saturday
Program wrap-up and debriefing: what have we learned & where do we go from here. Good-byes & travel home or if staying at camp continue with camp activities.
Explore the Camp
Our location has been described by many as breathtaking. As you follow the trail through the riverside meadows and across the bridge you come to our “camp village.” Here you will find our office, health center, dining hall, cabins, art center, and a host of recreational and training facilities such as our sports fields, basketball court, bike skills park, equestrian arena, pond, climbing walls, challenge course, swimming pool, and more. Beyond the camp village is where much of the magic takes place amongst the meadows and endless forest. Savoring a freshly picked carrot from our gardens or taking in the view from the high meadows on a mountain board run are long remembered. It is here where the fundamental joy of being a kid is all the excitement that is needed.
